This past Sunday, Don and I visited the Forest Hills cemetary near Boston to see a fabulous exhibit before it ends. It is called, "The Sculpture Path," and features beautiful and moving works of art, both on loan and for sale. The whole expeditiion took about two hours in an atmosphere of serenity, peace, and awe. Our favorites among the featured works included the following:

"Seated Ceres," by Kahlil Gibran, a brass sculpture which has the Goddess Ceres sitting with a sheaf of grain across Her lap, waiting patiently and happily for Her daughter Persephone to return from the Underworld.

"A Quiet Struggle," by Tom Sippel, a square stone piece with a person trapped inside the square and trying to get out...in the words of the artist, "This piece is dedicated to those who I have known or not, to whom death came early. Not by some accident or twist of fate, but as the result of some secret struggle of their own. I can still feel them gone. Friends, neighbors, and strangers, and many they must be, for I have met more than one or two. All alone, brave and strong, they struggle to choose. Nothing simple or easy about it, they face it head on. Convictions, addictions, afflictions, as I have never known, but the choices were never mine to know or understand. Yet, in the end, are we not all searching for the same thing--peace."

"Shards," by Eric Lintala. This work is a simple circle of stones, with various symbols carved or etched into them, underneath one of the old trees in the cemetary and definitely had the feel of sacredness to it. We felt blessed to experience it. The artisit describes it, in part: "Long before people developed a written language, they learned how to communicate or record through pictures. The full meaning of these ancient symbols left on stone will likely elude us forever. In caves or under vast cliffs, images of humankind, animals, and nature were inscribed, pecked and painted onto stone. The settings where these markings appear have become special places, sacred places, places where spirits dwell."

Other favorites would be mentioned here, but are simply beyond words to capture or convey their breathtaking beauty and depth. Suffice it to say that we came home with our spirits soothed and refreshed with a few more threads woven into the tapestry that is our life together, :-)
