Health and Fat..um, Fitness, :-)
Sep. 30th, 2002 07:58 pmSo here I sit, typing away, surfing the 'net once again. Only this time it's in the context of the weight loss program Don and I have begun. We are in our second week and doing fairly well as Don lost 7 lbs the first week and I lost 2lbs, Woo Hoo! All of this has been accomplished as the result of us getting tired of our increasing weight/girth. So we joined Weight Watchers online and have been truly enjoying the program. Add to this the regular exercise we are now getting and the result is two slimming down happy campers, :-). We even discovered that if we are good all week with diet and exercise, we can afford to have some wine over the weekend. Both of us are sleeping better and we also have more energy. I cut out all the additional afternoon coffee and reduced the amount of sugar added to my morning coffee. Having a vegetarian past is proving to be really helpful too. This afternoon I went to a natural foods co-op in Cambridge and had a wonderful time exploring the store, checking out new products, getting reacquainted with old ones, and generally feeling very much at home. One significant plus: they also stock a really good wine selection. Of note are the Greek wines they were sampling to customers. Having never tried them, I sampled and picked up a bottle of red, a 1997 Nemea Reserve called Cambas...truly smooth and delicious. It placed somewhere between shiraz and merlot, light enough to serve with, say, a really good root vegetable dish or legume soup and yet substantial enough to stand up to heavier fare such as roast pork or lamb.
So far, favorite recipe sites are:

http://www.epicurious.com
http://www.foodandwine.com
While many of the recipes aren't health-focused, it is easy enough to do a redux on most of them without compromising flavor and fulfillment. Needless to say, I am psyched!
