Dear Progressive Friend:

War is all but inevitable. Last night, George W. Bush announced that he is abandoning all diplomatic efforts for peace. This is a sad day for our nation. We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the latest action. Our friends at www.moveon.org are asking people to put lights – a string of Christmas lights, light bulb, candle or whatever works for you – in their windows as a sign of hope for peace.

The nation’s focus on the war will not stop Bush and congressional Republicans from pushing their irresponsible tax and budget proposals through Congress. One way to show your opposition is to join the Children’s Defense Fund Wednesday, March 19th, in a National Call-In Day for Children. Bush promised to leave no child behind but instead is leaving millions of children but no millionaire behind. Use the following toll-free number to call your Senators and Representatives and tell them to vote NO on the Republican Budget Committee’s proposals: 888-280-6279. For more information about the Call-In Day, go to www.cdfactioncouncil.org.

The President wants a $726 billion tax cut for the rich but to do so, he is advocating for a cut of as much as $470 billion over the next 10 years for Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, student loans, school lunches, child care, food stamps, cash assistance for the elderly, disabled and poor and many other programs, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. For information about the effect of Bush’s budget on your state, go to www.democrats.senate.gov/bushbudget/Bush_Budget-State-by-State.pdf. Help us publicize the effects of Bush’s budget by circulating this link.

In her column this week, Arianna Huffington suggests one way to ease the pain of our current economic slump is to eliminate the tax havens that allow corporations and wealthy individuals to cheat the government out of billions by hiding profits offshore. Republicans continue to block legislation that would outlaw these loopholes but stay tuned – backlash against the corporation-friendly White House is taking hold. To hear more on corporate corruption from Arianna, read her New York Times bestseller “Pigs at the Trough: How Corporate Greed and Political Corruption are Undermining America” which you can order at www.ariannaonline.com.

Progressive Majority has been waging a battle against these corporate traders for months. Log onto www.corporatetraitors.com to sign on to the campaign and route this link to your friends and family.

These and the other myriad of attacks that we face on a daily basis are reminders of the importance of electing progressive leaders we can be proud of. Consider making a contribution to Progressive Majority today by logging onto our secure website at www.progressivemajority.org immediately. Together we can change the direction of this country.

Sincerely,
Gloria A. Totten
