Bleh. This morning I am slowly recovering from a nasty flu which has kept me in bed for the previous two days and has left me feeling very much like I've weathered a particularly horrific storm. With the clouds retreating on the horizon life can begin to have some semblance of "normal" again.

The holidays were a rollercoaster of laughter and tears with my family out in Oklahoma. And while we all enjoyed the gifts we gave each other it was unanimous that the best gift was simply being together. My sister Debi continues to decline and it was difficult to see her in the state she was in. On one level she was talking about getting on with ther life and yet on another level she was/is clearly getting ready to leave us. She has been steadily giving things away as she prepares to cross over. We are all deeply grateful for the time we spent together and it appears now that she is ready to relax and let go. We will miss her and we will honor her memory always.

On a lighter note, we spent the New Year celebration per tradition at my best friend's Cindy's place. We numbered five with Cindy, her girlfriend Michele, our friend and Don's best man, John, and the two of us. As usual we ate and drank decadently, enjoyed the affections of our four-legged niece, Foster, and exchanged gifts. And speaking of gifts, Cindy and Michele's gift for me was simply awesome. At first I thought it was likely a case of some really fine wine as the box was about the right size, shape and weight for that. Then as I began to dig into it I saw it was something entirely different. They got me a poitjie pot! Last year I posted a link to it at amazon.com here on LJ and now I have it! Ohhhh it so made me cry. That gift will last beyond this lifetime and it will be a pleasure to pass it on to someone else when my time comes.

Two more gifts deserve special mention here as well. Don gave me a beautiful handcrafted silver and and gold wire bracelet with malachite chips and a lapis cabochon which he had commissioned. He said it was the "down payment" on the David Yurman I want in exchange for all my support of his academic and career pursuits, :-). And our dear friend [livejournal.com profile] thiamoon gave us our wedding gift she had been working on for some time to get it just right...a beautiful painting of a tree we had hiked by and photographed in the Middlesex Fells Reservation. She did it in watercolors and the painting radiates the love which went into it.

Whew! I know, I know. This is a lot. But there's been a lot going on and I just haven't had the wherewithal to keep up here lately. And yes, the job search continues as my job situation continues to deteriorate. Wish me luck folks. Gods know I need it.
