Wow...where to begin? It's been about a week now since my last post and a lot has happened in the interim. Rather than bore anyone with the minutiae, the highlights will be the mainstay of this post.
Don took Friday off in order to have a four day weekend, so we were already off to a good start with that. What with all the craziness around grad school and our recent family crisis, he REALLY needed this.
One of my colleauges took a leave of abscence to act in an upcoming independent film until the beginning of July. And while I was happy for her, I will definitely miss her as she is what I refer to as a "wingless angel." We have enjoyed working together, sharing tips about techniques and clients alike. It will be very good to see her once she returns.
Sunday we took the train to Salem for a much needed getaway. While the day had overcast weather with a bit of rain here and there, we still managed to have a great time as we visited the Peabody-Essex Museum along with other historic sites in the area. We also did some investigation into possible locations for our wedding and reception with The Ropes Mansion Formal Garden and the Hamilton House looking to be the most appealing for now. With the wedding still a couple of years away, we are presently only interested in information. The actual planning will begin in ernest about a year before we get married.
Monday was Don's birthday (insert THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE & CHEERS) and we celebrated it quietly at home with delicious homecooked food and even an impromptu cake which he made with great enthusiasm, :-). We also watched a couple of videos as part of the festivities: "The Others" and "The Musketeer." The first was GREAT viewing with a very interesting twist which caught us quite by surprise. Nicole Kidman was, as we expected, terrific in the role she played. The second was so lame and predictable that we were grateful at having only paid rental price for it. All in all, it was a great weekend.
Last but not least, I got a call from an old friend in Oklahoma. Alan and I go back farther than any of my friends and he is the only one from my home state with whom I feel comfortable remaining in touch. We had only recently reconnected via email and had exchanged several messages prior to his call. While he knew of my engagement, he didn't know that I had come out since we last saw each other five years ago. He made mention of my "girlfriend" which brought a smile to my face at such an innocent presumption. Moments later I told him the truth of my life as it is now. Although he was initially quite blown away by this news, upon reflection it came as no surprise to him. He offered his heartfelt congratulations to us both and stated that our friendship remained as good as ever. It was such a warm way to end the evening and we agreed that this was the beginning of many conversations to come. Of all the friends I had as a young adult, Alan was the only one I felt I could confide in about anything...no matter what. I count myself blessed to have him as a friend to this day.
