This is the text of an email sent to our Senator this afternoon regarding the nomination of Judge John Roberts to the position of U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Either you stand for what's good and right for America...including liberty and justice for ALL...or you do not. Let your conscience be your guide and then act accordingly. The link to take action is http://hrc.org/supremecourt/

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to oppose the nomination of Judge John Roberts to the post of United States Supreme Court Chief Justice.

Based on his record and the Senate hearings last week, I have grave concerns that Judge Robert's views on privacy could threaten the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans. Careful review of his record revealed Roberts' extremely skeptical view of the constitutional right to privacy and his open hostility towards enforcement of civil rights.

I am writing this to you not only as a constituent but also on the behalf of every married same sex couple in the United States. Currently my husband and I enjoy the same rights as all other married couples...in Massachusetts only. The moment we leave Massachusetts our marriage is considered null and void by all other state governments...not to mention the federal government. We pay higher taxes due to the federal government's refusal to give us full equal marriage rights...the rights all opposite sex American couples already enjoy. The point is that Judge Roberts' appointment to ANY seat on the highest court of our land could have grave results for the GLBT community...not only with regard to marriage equality but in other critical areas as well. The GLBT community is particularly vulnerable to discrimination, bias-motivated violence and discriminatory legislation. The Supreme Court is, and has been, a protector of minorities from sometimes misguided majorities. The nomination of John Roberts as Chief Justice threatens this historic and vital role of the court and makes this nomination more troubling still. If even one Supreme Court justice is allowed to influence the Court and thereby the U.S. by introducing the erosion of constitutional rights then what is anyone seeking legal affirmation of their constitutional rights to do?

Our community has also been the target of legislation designed to deny us our day in court to defend our Constitutional rights. Roberts has written - in contrast with mainstream views and even his superiors in the Reagan Administration - that such laws are constitutional, and he provided no evidence in his hearing that his view has changed.

The evidence released thus far indicates that Judge Roberts would vote with the court's right wing and that he would not carry out his responsibility to uphold constitutional rights. In the course of the Judiciary Committee's hearings, John Roberts had the chance to rebut the evidence in his record, but did not.

I strongly urge you not to confirm him and therefore uphold every American's right to privacy, equality and justice.

Thank you.
