Below is the text of an email reply I sent to a friend of the family who sent an email about freedom not being free along with a host of pics featuring U.S. military personnel fighting for "freedom" in other countries.
Hi Sheryl,
Interesting email. No freedom isn't free. An entire segment of American citizenry is STILL fighting for their own freedom. Until the day arrives when Don and I have the same rights as all heterosexual Americans we remain oppressed. Even the nation's largest employer...the Department of Defense...discriminates against us...LEGALLY. The federal government discriminates against us...LEGALLY. We pay higher taxes than other married couples because our marriage isn't recognized as legal by the federal government. And forget about Social Security or Veteran's benefits. Neither of us gets anything by right of survivorship because of the LEGAL discrimination of the federal government against us and all other couples like us.
All that said you'll simply have to pardon us if we aren't moved by the images of U.S. military members fighting in countries for business that's none of the U.S.'s while we remain without the full rights we should already have by virtue of birth on American soil.
Just my two cents.
